In 2018 and 2019, Ryan and his team partnered with MLSE Foundation at a pivotal moment as the organization sought to more clearly articulate its impact and evolve how its story was told.

MLSE Foundation leverages the power of sport to create opportunity for young people across Toronto. Backed by the city’s professional teams—the Raptors, Maple Leafs, Toronto FC, and the Argonauts—the Foundation invests in community-based programs, sport facilities, and initiatives that help youth build confidence, skills, and ambition on and off the field.

Problem / Challenge

As MLSE Foundation’s programs and investments continued to grow, its brand presence had not yet caught up to the scale or depth of its impact. The organization needed a clearer, more compelling way to communicate how sport was being used as a tool for long-term social change—not just participation.

At the same time, MLSE Foundation was preparing to produce its first-ever annual report. This presented both an opportunity and a challenge: how to translate complex impact data, partnerships, and community outcomes into a narrative that felt human, inspiring, and credible to donors, partners, and the broader public.

Strategy / Approach

The work focused on grounding MLSE Foundation’s story in people, place, and possibility. Rather than centering professional sport as the hero, the strategy emphasized youth experience—how access to sport creates pathways to confidence, belonging, and future opportunity.

Brand elements were refined to feel bold and optimistic while maintaining trust and institutional credibility. For the annual report, storytelling and data were treated as complementary: photography, quotes, and community narratives worked alongside clear impact metrics to create an engaging and balanced narrative flow.

The report structure was designed to be accessible and skimmable, allowing different audiences to quickly understand the Foundation’s mission, scale, and outcomes.

Solution & Outcomes

The resulting brand refresh clarified MLSE Foundation’s role as a leader in sport-based youth development and social impact. The inaugural annual report became a cornerstone communications asset—bringing the Foundation’s mission, partnerships, and community impact to life with clarity and emotion.

The publication established a new standard for how MLSE Foundation communicates its work, strengthening relationships with donors and partners while providing a cohesive narrative foundation for future reporting and storytelling.

The work helped position MLSE Foundation not only as a funder of programs, but as a long-term champion for youth opportunity—demonstrating how sport can be a powerful engine for social change.
